HAVE YOU EVER THOUGHT, “I WISH I COULD DO THAT”?
One of the worst things you can say to yourself as a coach is, “It’s already being done,” or, “I’ll never be able to do it like she does.”
That’s a mistake.
Because you’re the NEW in everything that already exists under the sun!
EMULATE BEFORE YOU INNOVATE
When I started my first job as a television news reporter, I was so green. I remember how I wanted to look and sound like the women who I thought were so smart and “cool” under pressure.
“I’ll never be able to do it like they do,” I would tell myself.
So, what did I do? I copied them, or rather, I emulated them: The way they talked. The expressions they made. The way they tilted their heads. The way they emphasized certain words. The way they signed off at the end of a news story.
All of it.
After all, I had no experience. I was working at a small market TV station, fresh out of college. I was green.
Let me be clear, I’m not saying plagiarize. I’m not telling you to rip off someone’s content. But I am saying that you can emulate how others have done that thing you want to do but fear you can’t because “it’s already been done.”
Instead, allow yourself to be inspired by the coaches you admire. Learn from them.
Emulate them.
Take an idea and make it uniquely yours.
Sure, Marie Forleo’s got B-School, but what can you learn from Marie? How can you apply your unique ability to it and create something that is entirely yours? How can you emulate what she’s doing by applying it to what you do?
Allow other women to inspire you.
Emulate them.
And when you’re ready, innovate the hell out of an old idea.
That’s the power of sisterhood, Coach!
